The other day I was online looking at jewelry topics to discuss here at Love & Pieces. I came across a mention of a mustard seed necklace. I had to to read it twice because I wasn’t sure I read it correctly the first time. A mustard seed necklace?
I was intrigued to say the least and started my mission to learn more. It turns out the mustard seed itself is just 1-2 millimeters. The mustard seed is almost unnoticeable to the naked eye. Don’t let its puny size fool you though! With its capacity to grow over 15 feet and its tendency to spread rapidly and widely, this seed packs a powerful punch. (LDS)
Great But What's The Significance?
It turns out the mustard seed is mentioned several times throughout the bible as a symbol of faith. The comparison use is like the tiny seed growing into a great shade-providing plant. Humble beginnings and a tad bit of faith can flourish into full-fledge devotion. Though the seed is a symbol of faith in Christianity, it is also known to signify good luck in the secular community. So between faith and luck, turns out there are quite a number of people wearing mustard seed necklaces.
Mustard Seed Jewelry
The seed was introduced as a fashion accessory around the Victorian Era between 1837-1901. (Love of Vintage) That’s nearly 200 years ago! Usually displayed in a glass amulet, the seed was popular among both women and men. The seed was showcased in various fashion décor such as watch chains, necklaces, brooches, and cufflinks.
Mustard seed jewelry made a major comeback in the 1940’s, during the World War II period, and continued its popularity throughout the 50’s and 60’s. The jewelry signified hope and perseverance during this time of change and turmoil. The seed was normally encased in a heart-shaped or round plastic orb.
Nowadays, you can find both vintage and modern day mustard seed jewelry in jewelry stores and online retailers. The modern jewelry is extremely popular in Christian boutique stores and on Etsy.
Necklaces are, by far, the most popular form of mustard seed jewelry. We selected a few mustard seed necklaces that we thought were worth showing to give you an idea of what is out there.
Glass Orb with Single Seed
This vintage-inspired pendant has history. Encased in a translucent glass orb, the seed appears to float in mid-air. Its dramatic presentation is a showstopper.
Glass Orb with Multiple Seeds
Looking for lots of luck. The collection of mustard seeds is displayed in this glass orb pendent. Lots of shades range between earthy brown and subdued yellow.
The Classic Cross
Seeing as they are both symbols of faith, the cross and mustard seed pair well. The classic cross can be worn casually and for special events. Our preference is our cross bracelet from Dafne though.
The Sentimental Inscription
The silver plated pendant layered behind the resin-encased mustard seed is very interesting. The “Faith” stamped message is inspirational and empowering. The necklace can serve as a reminder to push through even the most difficult days because a little bit of faith can concur mammoth tribulations.
The Passionate Heart Necklace
The simple heart-shaped pendent is endearing. The necklace is a gift idea for that religious person in your life.
Don't Forget the Past
Anyone who grew up between the 1940’s through the 60’s is likely to remember the mustard seed jewelry trend. If you grew up during in this period (or know anyone who did), we’d love to hear your story and the ways mustard seed jewelry impacted your life.
